ZODIAC BLACK'S TATTOO STUDIO

Zodiac Black’s is a tattoo studio located in an historic cast iron storefront on Thompson Street in New York City’s Soho district. The studio holds four tattoo stations with non-workstation elements condensed into a single “utility pod” providing artists with the greatest area for their work. The design is based on the client’s desire for a hospitality-based experience for their clients with the parameters of space size, program, hygiene, and budget.

The design creates a grand feeling by capitalizing on the existing brick walls, high ceilings, and large glass openings leaving Soho’s historic architecture in full view. The simple color palette with a juxtaposition of flat and gloss finishes adds life to the neutral tones. The burgundy utility pod with its custom tambour facia has scaleless nature, reading more like an object sitting in the space than its reality as a collection of mundane elements. The metallic epoxy floor, satisfying the requirement for non-porous surfaces, was an opportunity to collaborate with the owner/artist to create an unique element.
